Athens is included in the top ten international destinations that American travelers choose to travel to this autumn season, who continue to be loved with Europe, as nine out of ten international destinations for autumn 2024 are European.
As AAA Travel finds, the Greek capital is in sixth place among the top 10 international travel destinations of Americans in the fall of 2024, up one place from its previous report this summer, where Athens was in seventh place.
Rome remains the most popular vacation destination for Americans in both the fall and summer seasons, with the list of international destinations preferred by travelers from the U.S. being a European affair, with Canada being the only “dissonant”.
According to AAA, autumn is the ideal time for international travel, especially in Europe, where there is no summer overcrowding.”
“This time of year, known as the midseason for travel, means mild weather, fewer crowds and better prices,” said Stacey Barber, vice president of AAA Travel. “AAA’s booking numbers show that more people are taking air travel this season, both domestically and abroad, and many travelers are taking fall cruises to enjoy the foliage of trees in Alaska and New England!”

Top travel trends
According to AAA booking data, the two categories of travel that are showing increased demand this fall, compared to last year, are air travel and cruises. Domestic bookings are up 1% and international bookings are up 3%.
Travelers are expected to pay about the same as last fall for a trip both within and outside the U.S., with the average domestic round-trip airfare at $660 and the same price for international travel to amount to 1,315 dollars.
Domestic cruise bookings are up 19% over last fall and international cruise bookings are up 6%. The average cost of a cruise from US cities is similar to last fall at $2,355, while the average cost of international cruises is up 1% to $3,560.
