COVID-19: How the Greek Government has dealt with the pandemic | How will be the lockdown eased

The Greek Government has swiftly taken measures to fight the COVID-19 pandemic and is now entering a new period of a gradual ease of the restrictive measures from 4 May 2020.

As can be seen in the presentation Greece has achieved to reduce the transmission rate from 2.5 to 0.5 in the wake of 2 months (from February until April 2020) and is now in a better position as more than 3700 health personnel were recruited, there is an availability of 1015 ICUs from both the private and the public health sector, the tests per day for COVID-19 have been increased to almost 5500 and there are more than 21 million masks reserved.

Greece is ready to move into the next phase due to the following factors:

  • Low Transmission Rate
  • New Safety and Hygiene Culture
  • New lessons that were learned from other countries in the fight against the pandemic
  • The national health system has improved
  • Greece’s favorable climate has helped in the fight against the coronavirus
  • Measures are taken in order to ensure economic and social cohesion

Greece will be gradually easing the restrictive measures from 4 May 2020 and according to the results will move into the next phases or reintroduce the necessary measures, if needed.

The Government is aiming at:

  • Strengthening public health
  • Developing a monitoring and intervention mechanism
  • Accelerating the digital transformation of the State
  • Restarting economic activity in stages and promoting remote working by 70%
  • The gradual reopening of schools
  • Setting new rules of social distancing
