DRV: Pre-bookings in the German market at high levels | Concern about the gap between sales and travellers

TOURISM

Pre-bookings for summer holidays are at an all-time high this year in the German tourism market, according to figures announced today at the opening of ITB 2024 by the German Association of Travel Agents (DRV).

In particular, according to these data, an increase of 24% is recorded in pre-bookings at travel agencies and online portals, compared to the previous year.

Thanks to the return of early bookings, sales of package holidays appear to be up 30%, compared to last year (data up to the end of January 2024), and are up 11%, compared to 2019.

“Germans want to travel and they are travelling. For their summer holidays, they are again increasingly opting for the security and flexibility of package holidays, and the number of Germans taking package holidays is increasing,” explained DRV President Norbert Fiebig.

Increase in revenue, but not in the number of travellers

For months, the tourism industry has been expressing concerns about the gap between revenues and the number of travellers, which continues to widen.

Although sales are higher now than in 2019, the number of travellers appears to be down 17%, compared to 2019. This means that the gap has widened further, as last year, the gap between revenue and travellers was -13%.

The booking data comes from Travel Data + Analytics, and is based on data from traditional and online travel agencies.
