Reservations for Greece show a significant recovery, from Germany, after the significant lag observed at the beginning of the year.

Following on from what we brought you from the ITB International Tourism Fair in Berlin and the Tourism Ministry’s estimates of a 3% increase in the tourist flow from Germany to Greece this year, we are now revealing the latest travel data of Holidaycheck, for German-speaking markets, which give a picture of a significant recovery in reservations for Greece, after mid-February and especially in March.

It is recalled that the previous data we presented EXCLUSIVELY on February 19, showed stability in the bookings for Greece, while the same picture was also excerpted from the bookings data from 1 November 2018, which basically started booking tourists for the summer season 2019.

More detailed showed the data until 15 February:

  • in the first seven weeks of 2019, bookings to Greece show a 3% decrease, compared to the corresponding period of 2018. It is noted that last year’s deposit for Greece in 2018, compared to 2017, increased by 20%.
  • earned this year is Turkey, which shows an increase of 21%, compared with an increase of 74% last year, but it remains, of course, last year’s performance.
  • in “red” is Egypt with a 8% decrease, compared with an increase of 73% last year compared to 2017 Spain shows a slight increase of 2%, compared with a decrease of 8% last year
  • Cyprus has seen a 24% decline, compared with an increase of 37% last year, which is a cause of problems.
  • from the start of pre-payments, the November of 2018, Greece has seen a 1% pre-payments increase, a 2% decrease in overnight stays and an increase of 1% in revenue.

The new image gives a significant increase in early booking

More specifically and according to the latest data of HolidayCheck, the largest travel website for all German speaking countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) in which everyone can find the ideal hotel, and close their holidays and get in touch with other holidaymakers (Holidaycheck draws from a database of more than 8 million hotel ratings, pictures and videos to find you the best deal), Greece has shown a 26% increase in the last week, while Turkey and Egypt were in the “red” , with 10 and 13%, respectively.

Τhe only country in the wider region is Croatia that has seen a higher increase in its pre-payments by 30%, while Tunisia which this year is up high, is at 22%.

Cyprus continues to be in the “red” and even higher by -18%, compared to the same period last year. Spain is showing a low positive pace, while the holiday trend in Germany continues to rise, with a 24% increase compared to last year.

A significant increase of 13% is seen in Bulgaria, a slight increase of 6% in Portugal, while large declines are in the US and Cuba.

What the data show until 15 March

We also reveal the developments in the bookings, until March 15 from the German speaking markets for Greece, according to the HolidayCheck, which show a significant acceleration of the bookings for Greece, since their pace, from negative in January, was one-digit positive in February, to launch at 16% for the first 15 days of March.

More specifically, bookings in the first 15 days of May rose by 16%, overnight stays by 14%, revenue by 17% and tourists by 17%. February was also positive with 5%, 2%, 4% and 5% respectively against negative indices in January.
