The Greek Cuisine Awards 2024, as part of the institution of the Golden Hats, were awarded on Tuesday 14 May at “Makedonia Palace” in Thessaloniki, co-organized by the South Aegean Region, which supports in many ways the promotion of modern Greek cuisine.

According to a statement by G. Hadjimarkos: “The commitment to support this great struggle to preserve local identity, tradition and personality is stronger than ever.”

With a stricter award basis this year, the South Aegean remained the region with the most award-winning restaurants, as 32 of the 85 awarded restaurants are located in the Dodecanese and Cyclades.

A special moment of the ceremony was the awarding of a special prize to the chef from Rhodes, George Troumouchis, as an excellent example that shows the way for the promotion of localism in modern Greek gastronomy. Together with his team, the chef of the Rhodian “Noble” has recorded the unique recipes of the island and developed them into an innovative Rhodian cuisine, which has been consistently awarded with a Golden Cap in recent years.

In the same spirit, the South Aegean Region through its promotion to European Region of Gastronomy and its participation in international gastronomy institutions, such as the Young Chef Awards, in the context of which it has collaborated with Chef George Troumouchis in 2016 winning the gold medal, but also with various other initiatives such as Aegean mamas know best, which made traditional island recipes known to the general public and the younger generation, seeks to contribute to the recreation of local cuisine according to the requirements of modern gastronomy. In this pursuit, it is also coordinated with the Athinorama Greek Cuisine Awards 2024, which is why it supports the institution.

The South Aegean Regional Governor, George Hadjimarkos who was among those who presented awards said: “We are proud of the excellent presence for another year of the gastronomy of our islands and the recognition of the work of the people of the catering and production sectors.

Congratulations to “Athinorama” for consistently and devotedly highlighting the exceptional wealth of Greek gastronomy for decades.

From our side, the commitment to support this great struggle to preserve identity, tradition and personality is stronger than ever”, while for the award to chef George Troumouchis, he said that those who know him know that he is a true “teacher”.

The Hellenic Cuisine Awards 2024, through the award ceremony, gave the impetus for the necessary renewal of our national gastronomy, encouraging restaurateurs and chefs to research, study and develop local cuisines, highlighting the gastronomic treasures that remain untapped.

This was the message of this year’s ceremony, which began with the “delegations” of the country’s gastronomic regions marching symbolically, while the head of each of them held a placard with a “forgotten” local dish of his region (such as the peeled codfish with tomato paste and garlic sauce from the Cyclades and macaroons with onions and shitaka from the Dodecanese) with the characteristic inscription “Charged… ” as a reminder of our forgotten culinary heritage.
