Handling almost 8 million passengers, London Heathrow Airport recorded another record month in August, the fourth consecutive month this summer season.
Last month the number of passengers at London’s air hub grew by 5.5%, meaning that Heathrow served 82.6 million travellers in the last 12 months. While, at the same time, it is on course to record 30 million passengers between June and September 2024, which would be a first for the airport.
Departing passengers remained consistently above 130,000 a day for most of August, with Greece, Spain, Italy and Turkey proving to be popular summer destinations.
The busiest day ever was August 18, when the airport served 269,000 travellers.
August also saw the airport record 13 days, with more than 260,000 passengers per day, and the busiest week ever, which was August 13-19, with 1.8 million passengers.
Routes to Los Angeles and Madrid attracted more than 1 passenger per month and were added to those to Doha, Dublin, Dubai and New York JFK.
Taylor Swift’s concerts attracted an additional 40,000 passengers this summer during the European leg of her Eras tour.
Commenting on the above figures, Heathrow chief executive Thomas Woldbye said: “I am grateful to the Heathrow team for their preparation and dedication to delivering an outstanding getaway to more passengers than ever before, maintaining strong service levels during our busiest summer. Over the last four months we have broken many new records, demonstrating our ability to deliver a world of opportunity to more people, freight, businesses and the UK economy.”
Meanwhile, Manchester Airports Group (MAG) reported that nearly seven million people used its three airports in August, an increase of 6.6% year-on-year.
This meant that more than 13 million passengers used Manchester, Stansted and East Midlands airports during the summer, high season of July and August.
August was a record month for Manchester Airport as it served 3.4 million passengers, up 8.8%, compared to August 2023.
Stansted also had its busiest month with 3.1 million passengers, up 4.9%, while passengers using East Midlands Airport increased by 2.8% to more than 540,000.
