The prices of last minute tourist packages offered in the German market for three popular Greek islands – Rhodes, Kos and Crete – are on the decline.
In more detail, according to a survey by the well-known travel platform HolidayCheck, which is aimed at German-speaking markets, the prices of family holiday packages this summer, for bookings in June, offered to German holidaymakers for Rhodes appear reduced by 9% and in June amounted to 4,422 euros, from 4,881 euros in April. Similarly, for Kos and Crete the decrease is in double digits at 12%, with the average price for Kos in June at 4,246 euros, down from 4,847 euros in April, and for Crete at 4,202 euros, down from 4,766 euros.
The survey, which covers a one-week holiday package, including flights, hotel, meals and transport, for two adults and two school-age children between 19 July and 9 September 2024, reveals that there is a drop in 14 of the 15 favourite package holiday destinations for Germans, with the biggest drop in Lanzarote and the Turkish coast, by 22% and 15% respectively.
So a family with two school-age children will pay on average around €1,200 less for a week’s package holiday in Lanzarote, booking in June, compared to April. While, for the Turkish coast, the savings amount to almost 800 euros.
An average price of under 3,500 euros per week for a family with two adults and two children can be found in Tunisia and Egypt.
At the same time, car rental prices for last minute bookings are down, with the biggest drop of over 30% offered at Malaga airport, while in Mallorca prices are 10% cheaper.
Attempting to explain the phenomenon of reduced prices on last minute bookings, Nina Hammer, travel expert at HolidayCheck, says this could be due to the fact that bookings at the start of the year were subdued and due to reduced demand, there is still capacity available, particularly in high-priced areas, which is now leading to a drop in prices.
