June tHPI: Madrid and Cairo see the biggest month-on-month increases in hotel prices

Hotel prices in the majority of European cities witness an increase in average rate for a standard double room in June, along with some other major cities all around the world as listed on the trivago Hotel Price Index (tHPI), reported by global hotel metasearch trivago.com

Madrid sees this month’s sharpest rise in hotel prices on the tHPI in Europe, with its average rate for a standard double room increasing by 28% from last month to reach 154 euros per night. The city with the largest month-on-month hotel price increase in Africa reported on the tHPI in June is Cairo, where travelers will now pay 100 euros on average for an overnight stay in a standard double room, a 21% increase compared to last month. Paris is another European city that follows Madrid and Cairo in the biggest increases scale, with its average hotel price at 168 euros for an overnight stay in June, a 21% increase compared to last month.

Kuala Lumpur reports the sharpest escalation in hotel prices in Asia this month for an overnight stay, where travelers will pay €58 on average for a standard double room in June, a 16% increase compared to May. Average hotel prices in Vancouver see an increase as well, rising 20% this month compared to last to reach 210 euros for a standard double room per night. Hong Kong and Las Vegas, by contrast, report this month’s most significant decreases in hotel prices listed on tHPI: the cities’ average rates are down by 16% and 18% respectively, falling to 112 euros in Hong Kong and to €104 in Las Vegas for a standard double room per night.

Year-on-year comparison in hotel prices

Most cities listed on the trivago Hotel Price Index register a year-on-year increase in their hotel prices this June. The average overnight rate for a standard double room in Manila is now 7 euros5, a 58% increase compared to June 2018, making it the city with the highest year-on-year hotel price increase this month. In second place is Madrid, reporting a 57% year-on-year increase, which translates into 154 euros for a standard double room per night. Marrakech holds the third place, registering an increase of 22% compared to June last year with an average rate for an overnight hotel stay now at 140 euros. Completing the list of five cities registering the highest year-on-year increases this June are Delhi, where the average rate of €51 is 22% higher compared to last year and Rio de Janeiro, where the average price of 66 euros shows an increase of21% from June 2018.

In contrast, Moscow sees a 58% decrease in its hotel rates compared to last year, making it the city with the most significant year-on-year drop in hotel prices, which translates into an average of €66 for an overnight hotel stay this month.

Reykjavik follows with an 18% decrease in hotel prices for a second consecutive month for an overnight stay in comparison with last year, which translates into €146 on average for a standard double room. Chicago reports a 13% decrease in its hotel prices compared to June last year, meaning travelers will pay 178 euros on average for an overnight stay in a standard double room. Toronto and Athens complete the list of the cities with the most significant decreases in hotel prices this month compared to June 2018. In Toronto, travelers will pay 141 euros which shows a decrease of 11%. Athens reports a decrease in hotel prices of 9% on a year-on-year comparison, which translates into 111 euros for a standard double room per night.
