Lufthansa Group: addition of an environmental fee to airline tickets

AIR NEWS BUSINESS WORLD

Lufthansa Group airlines are imposing an environmental fee of up to €72 on flights from 2025.

The German airline said that the surcharge is intended “to cover part of the steadily increasing additional costs due to regulatory environmental requirements”.

The surcharge will vary between €1 and €72 depending on the route and fare. The surcharge is imposed on all tickets issued from yesterday, Wednesday 26 June, and applies to departures from 1 January 2025. It applies to all flights sold and operated by the Lufthansa Group departing from the 27 EU countries, as well as the UK, Norway and Switzerland.

In addition to Lufthansa, the group includes Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings and Swiss.

In a statement on the issue, the German airline group says it invests billions in new technologies every year and works with partners on innovations that help to gradually make flights more sustainable. In addition, the group has actively supported global climate and weather research for many years. However, it is not in a position to shoulder the successively increasing additional costs resulting from regulatory requirements alone in the coming years. So part of these expected costs for 2025 will be covered by the new environmental fee.

“The surcharge is intended to cover part of the steadily increasing additional costs due to regulatory environmental requirements. These include the statutory initial 2% blending ratio of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) for departures from European Union countries from 1 January 2025, adjustments to the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS), as well as other regulatory environmental charges such as the Carbon Offset and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA),” the Lufthansa Group said.
