An integrated solution- strategic plan for the tourist development of Karpathos was introduced by the deputy Minister of Tourism, Mr. Manos Konsolas, during the special thematic conference of the City Council in Karpathos.
It was noted that the new tourist model for Karpathos requires synergies between the government, the Municipal authorities, the Regional authorities and third parties. Karpathos has great potential, taking into consideration the increased tourist rates in 2019 in international tourists. “Karpathos can create its very own autonomous standard of tourist development, investing in quality”. It can attract visitors whose average expenses can exceed the average rates in Greece, which amounts to 559 euros per person today. This new model can go beyond the all-inclusive concept and turn to alternative tourism. This means that the airport of the island needs to be modernized by a strategic investor, being among the topmost busy in tourists. There are 7 pillars to support this plan:
- Sea Tourism- Cruises, by creating a marina.
- Climbing tourism, by securing and certifying the climbing areas (Kyra Panagia, Apella, Flaskia Gorge)
- Cultural Tourism, by promoting Saria and preserving the monuments as well as by creating a Virtual Reality Museum and an innovative Folk Museum in Olympos.
- Diving Tourism, by creating a diving park
- Agrotourism, by renovating traditional Karpathian houses and their equipment and using them for accommodation.
- Ecotourism, via hiking routes, by developing the infrastructure and creating observation points in the Northern part of the island, already incorporated in the Natura 2000 network.
- Development of the special cultural features of Karpathos. The deputy Minister pointed out that folk art must become an integral part of the island’s tourist product including customs, music, traditional costumes and folk works of art.
The Ministry of Tourism is going to support the promotion of activities related to the special cultural features of Karpathos.
