The Municipality of Zakynthos officially takes over the iconic Navagio, according to a bill of the Ministry of National Economy and Finance, which provides for the world famous beach and the introduction of a ticket.
The Ministry of National Economy grants the Municipality of Zakynthos the management of the emblematic area of Navagio, including the introduction of an entrance fee, according to a provision in a draft bill.
According to a provision of the draft bill of the Ministry of Finance, entitled “Measures to boost income, tax incentives for innovation and business transformation and other provisions”, which has been submitted to the Parliament and is put to public consultation, the concession of the use of the seashore, the beach and the sea area of Navagio to the Municipality of Zakynthos is provided. The concession is free of charge, with the aim of managing, protecting and exploiting the area, provided that the State has first completed the basic rescue work of the Navagio. In this context, as stated, the Municipality of Zakynthos also undertakes to carry out works and maintenance and restoration of the area and its works, installations and infrastructure.
The same provision provides for the introduction of an entrance fee, the proceeds of which will be used to finance infrastructure projects that serve the development needs of Zakynthos and, in particular, the area of Navagio, while 15% of the proceeds will be attributed by the Municipality of Zakynthos to the Ministry of National Economy and Finance as well as to O.F.Y.P.E.K.A.
The position of the Municipality
This development was welcomed by the Municipality of Zakynthos, stating in a statement posted on its website that it is the result of a goal, which came after hard and methodical work of the municipal authority, the Mayor, George Stasinopoulos personally, but also the overall service agents of the Municipality.
According to the same statement, from the significant revenues generated by the management, most of them will be returned to the Zakynthian society for the implementation of development projects, but also for the maintenance of the area.
“Today is a day of vindication for the municipal authority. A day when pressure, cooperation and systematic raising of the issue at the top level are paying off. And the Navagio issue is only the beginning,” it stressed.
The Municipality points out that with the provision of the Ministry of Finance, a new era begins for Zakynthos, for the Navagio, for Tourism.
“The Navagio belongs to all Zakynthians! And now this will be true by the letter of the law… and even though it took more than 40 years for this to happen. A lasting legacy for future generations, for our island. For Zakynthos!”, the statement underlines.
