Overtourism stops Airbnb bookings in Mallorca

Short-term rental accommodation bookings in Mallorca in July were down 8% in Palma in July compared to 2023 according to AirDNA, following government intervention and strong protests by residents against over-tourism. At the same time, bookings fell by 12%.

In contrast to Mallorca, however, bookings for short-term rentals increased by 5% in Barcelona, according to AirDNA. Bookings in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Santa Cruz de la Palma in the Canary Islands also saw increases of 17% and 30% respectively.

Travellers’ interest in short-term rentals, especially in cities, has increased in recent years. According to Skift Research’s latest State of Travel report, demand in urban destinations with the highest supply increased by 21% in 2023.

International arrivals rose 6% in July and August, according to ForwardKeys, a travel data company.

Spain was one of Europe’s most popular destinations this year, with nearly 43 million visits in the first six months. Massive protests against over-tourism have taken place in Barcelona, Malaga, the Canary Islands and Menorca.
