Sani Resort Receives Global Award for Low-Carbon Ecological Scenic Spot ‘Sustainable Cities And Human Settlements Awards 2021’

Sani Resort, Greece, is delighted to announce it has been awarded with a 2021 Global Award for Low-Carbon Ecological Scenic Spot by the Selection Committee of the Sustainable Cities And Human Settlements Awards (SCAHSA).

The Forum is connected tο and supported by the United Nations and works mostly between countries and organisations. The Awards themselves focus on promoting the implementation of United Nations sustainable development goals, and therefore this achievement and win is a recognition of Sani Resort’s prominent progress and work towards the set of interlinked global goals that serve as a blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all.

The awardees were announced and commended at the virtual Awards Ceremony on Friday 29th October, and was a significant part of the 16th Global Forum on Human Settlements (GFHS 2021). The Awards Ceremony was held on the last day of a three-day event.

The Selection Committee of the Sustainable Cities And Human Settlements Awards provided the following statement: “Sani Resort has set an inspiring example with the story of deriving 100% of its electricity from renewable sources and becoming the first carbon neutral resort in Greece. Blessed with outstanding natural environment, the Resort has put into action a set of sustainability initiatives under the Sani Green Programme, such as eliminating disposable plastics and seeking biodegradable alternatives; implementing water recycling and water use efficiency measures; protecting wildlife and biodiversity; reinforcing buildings with green roofs; employing solar energy systems, and engaging tourists, communities and local organizations through hosting capacity building training and tree-planting activities. Overall, the Resort has contributed to climate change mitigation and sustainable tourism development.”

The award highlights Sani Resort’s position as a world leading sustainable destination, thanks to not only its scenic setting,  in a 1,000-acre eco-reserve, with 7km of sandy beaches, over 20km of forest trails and 270-acres of wetlands to explore, but also its devotion and ongoing commitment to preserving its unique natural surroundings though the Sani Green programme.

Sani Resort’s sustainable Sani Green programme aims to preserve their environment and support local communities and is now even stronger with the launch of the Zero Carbon Footprint project. Sani is committed to contributing to the fight against climate change, with the aim to mitigate emissions, increase renewable energy use and balance out remaining emissions. In 2020, Sani Resort successfully became the first carbon neutral resort in Greece, balancing its net emissions to zero, while the resort has been running on 100% renewable electricity since 2019. The key initiatives of Sani Green are supported by a well-defined set of policies and measurable targets, all in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Half a century of respecting nature has crafted Sani Resort into the ultimate sustainable destination, and Sani’s commitment to change and improvement has been proven by ongoing achievements and milestones. Sani Resort is also a member of the United Nations Global Compact.

Under the guidance of Group Director of Sustainability and CSR for Sani Resort, Eleni Andreadis, the resort has also reduced water use in the last five years by 48%, reduced single use plastic by 80% since 2013, and has recycling rates of over 90%. In addition, the Sani Green programme helps and supports the local biodiversity and community, including sourcing local produce, and helping over 35 organisations and charities. Sani Resort’s next goal is the triple zero goal, which will see the resort become net zero by 2030, as well as zero plastic and zero waste by 2024.
