The Municipality of Kea is attempting to put an end to Spanish company Inmo Parck Invest’s plans to build another luxury hotel complex on Kea by rejecting the Environmental Impact Study (EIS) that was put out for public consultation.
The municipality’s decision was based mainly on two serious reservations:
a) the sustainability of the island’s water resources and
b) the lack of plans for housing the staff who will work at the resort.
As noted in the municipality’s proposal, the project’s water needs (which amount to 64,000 cubic meters per year) are expected to be met by three boreholes, which, according to the municipal authority, poses a risk of water depletion, particularly in the vulnerable area of Poissa, which already experienced serious water shortages last year, with an impact on agricultural production.
In particular, the decision states that ‘because we believe that pumping so many cubic meters of water from the three boreholes will create a problem for the island’s water table, especially in the sensitive area of Poissa, where last year we had many problems due to overpumping of water and saw the first signs of water scarcity affecting fruit and vegetable crops in the area.”
At the same time, there are no plans for the accommodation of workers.
Inmo Parck Invest S.A. became known through its participation in the TAIPED tender for the Koniavitis Thermal Spring & Camping in Kamena Vourla, but has expanded to other areas. Its investment program is worth over €200 million and, in addition to Kamena Vourla, it is planning a new investment similar to Hills & Sea Kea Resorts in Mykonos.
Inmo Parck Invest’s investment in Kea, as described in the Environmental Impact Study (EIS), is planned to be constructed in two phases: the first lasting 12 months and the second lasting 25 months. It will include:
- A central hotel with a capacity of 174 beds
- 61 furnished tourist residences, divided into four “neighbourhoods”, in ground-level and semi-underground buildings
- A wellness centre (spa) with a capacity of 100 people
- Sports facilities (mini golf courses, children’s activities)
- Accompanying infrastructure, such as sewage facilities, water supply and drainage networks, as well as an underground pedestrian crossing under the provincial road Ioulidas-Vroskopos.
The building will be constructed with a coefficient of 0.07, while up to 60% of the total building area can be used for tourist residences for rent. The resort is planned to operate year-round, creating approximately 100 new jobs.
Inmo Parck Invest S.A., with offices in Athens and Malaga, is active in Greece and Spain, participating in large real estate and tourism infrastructure projects.
