Volotea celebrates its first million passenger in Athens

Volotea, one of the fastest-growing independent airlines in Europe, started operating in Athens in 2015 and in four years has already reached its first million passenger carried in the Greek capital.

The airline has celebrated this achievement with an event at Athens main terminal where the passenger was awarded with one year of free flights.

Volotea started its operations in Athens in 2015 and launched its base in the Greek airport in May 2018. Kalliopi Papanastou, the Volotea first million passenger in Athens, was flying from Athens to Heraklion. She was awarded with a year-long free flights prize to any Volotea destination from Athens.

Since Volotea started operations in Athens in 2015, the airline has been successfully increasing its customers year-on-year. Since the launch of the base on May 2018, Volotea has enhance its offer, adding new destinations and creating 55 local jobs. Two Boeing 717 aircraft are based at Athens airport.

Moreover, Volotea will celebrate it until November 30th with a promotion at its website offering tickets from €9 to all Volotea new destinations in 2020.

The new routes will be operated as follows:

  • Marseille: From 4th April, 18,000 seats, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
  • Lyon: From 13th April, 18,000 seats, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
  • Split: From 13th April, 15,000 seats, Wednesdays and Sundays.
  • Cagliari: From 25th May, 11,000 seats, Mondays and Fridays.

In 2020 Volotea will offer 580,000 seats increasing its capacity by 11% and will serve from Athens a line-up of fourteen destinations: four domestic routes (Santorini, Mykonos, Heraklion and Rhodes), five destinations in Italy (Venice, Bari, Genoa, Verona and Cagliari), two city pairs to Croatia (Dubrovnik and Split) and three to France (Strasbourg, Lyon and Marseille).

Volotea’s Hamburg base has been opened to operate Airbus’ shuttle service, recently awarded. Bases in Lyon and Naples are to be launched in 2020.

To capitalize its growth in activity, more than 150 new positions are open for recruitment in France, Italy, Spain, Greece and Germany for a total headcount of 1,450 in 2020.
