What is happening and what we claim from Booking and Expedia | All that the Santorini Hoteliers Association reports

The president of the Santorini Hoteliers Association, Mr. Antonis Pagonis, reacts to the new charges of Booking and Expedia, seeking legal action and negotiations.

The positions of the Santorini Hoteliers Association were made known and informed the POX by its president Mr. Antonis Pagoni, referring to the issue that has arisen with the new charges unilaterally decided by Booking and Expedia and so the Competition Commission took the floor and is expected to meet in the next few hours in Greece with a representative of Booking to discuss the problem that has arisen.

The issue concerns the non refundable prices i.e. the reservations that cannot be cancelled, with Booking not giving the hotelier the right to collect his money with the bank card of his choice, forcing hoteliers to use only their own Virtual Card, on which they unilaterally made a huge increase in their rate, from 1.1% to 3%, multiplying their profit.

The Hotelier only needs to get the money from the reservations through this virtual card, which keeps a 15% to 20% and an additional 3% for the handling of the money. At the same time, it also pre-collects the overnight stay tax which is now the climate crisis and change tax, which is prohibited by law by the Greek state.

The response and reaction of the Santorini Hoteliers Association is: “We targeted as the Santorini Hoteliers Association, we highlighted the issue, we sent a letter, we sent a complaint and then together with the P.O.X. and the Hotel Chamber, we signed it. Our document was signed by the P.O.X. and then the Chamber of Hotels denounced it to the Competition Commission. For us, it is really out of logic what they want to do, and we are the first Association to highlight this and we are proud that the Executive Director of Booking Mediterranean is coming directly to Greece to talk to Mr. Yannis Hatzis, the President of the Panhellenic Federation of Hoteliers. So we have achieved something.”, stresses Mr. Pagonis.

He continues: “the hotels are currently asking the obvious from booking and expedia. They are asking for the right firstly to have the right to pre-collect their own money, so they give better prices and secondly to be able to take their money in any way they want. Whether they want it with a virtual booking card, whether they want it with any credit card, whether they want it with an internet bank.”
