Filias completed his analysis of the geopolitical landscape, noting that we are in an era &#8220;of inability to predict the future, as the world moves from globalization to small regionalizations.&#8221; He emphasized the absence of a &#8220;global policeman&#8221; and the reluctance of the US to intervene in issues that are not of their immediate interest, with Ukraine being a prime example.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/money-tourism.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/SETE-SYNEDRIO-2025-KARAVAIAS-MONEY-TOURISM-PHOTO-IMG_3220-scaled.jpeg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The CEO of Eurobank SA, Fokion Karavias, described the European economy as a mix of resilience and stagnation. &#8220;While the European economy shows signs of resilience, with projections of 1% growth in 2025 and possibly 1.5% in 2026, mainly due to German fiscal expansion, there is stagnation at the institutional level,&#8221; said Mr. Karavias. He referred to the Draghi Report on investment, innovation, and less regulation, the &#8220;paralysis&#8221; politics observed in France, and the rise of the far-right AfD in Germany.<\/p>\n<p>On the subject of investments, Mr. Karavias noted that although conditions are favorable with low interest rates and tight spreads, especially for Greece, &#8220;we are at lower levels than we would like&#8221; in relation to European investments. He mentioned the successful utilization of the Recovery Fund by Greek businesses, in contrast to other European countries, and the availability of funding through the Hellenic Development Bank for small businesses.<\/p>\n<p>However, he pointed out the challenge of productivity. &#8220;Work productivity in Greece was at the Eurozone average in 2007. Today we are at 70% of that size,&#8221; Mr. Karavias, while acknowledging that tourism inherently has lower productivity than industry, rejected the notion that it siphons resources from other sectors, citing the fact that about 25% of Recovery Fund loans remain unallocated, suggesting a lack of demand from other sectors.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Theocharis refuted the idea of immobility, emphasizing that for Greece &#8220;resilience and stability apply.&#8221; He pointed out that our country is growing at about twice the European average, achieving real convergence. Regarding investments, he said that &#8220;by 2025 we are already above 15% of GDP in investments, surpassing the 2022 record, while the target of 17.7% for this year will be exceeded.&#8221; He recognized the need to strengthen productivity and focus on human resources, by resolving structural issues in energy and education to fill skill gaps.<\/p>\n<p>The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized Greece&#8217;s significant position in the realm of &#8220;soft power,&#8221; noting the warm welcome extended to visitors from countries such as Israel and the Arab world. &#8220;Everyone who comes here feels like they&#8217;re at home,&#8221; he said, explaining how these &#8220;people-to-people&#8221; relationships translate into economic and political power.<\/p>\n<p>The panel discussed the perception of safety, duration and proximity of crises, as well as the reliability of the state in attracting tourists. &#8220;Greece is considered a &#8216;safe haven&#8217; for Israelis,&#8221; Mr. Filis, adding that the strategic choice to strengthen relations with countries like Israel, in addition to its diplomatic benefits, also led to a significant increase in tourist flows. For example, he mentioned flights from Tel Aviv to Athens, which remained full even during periods of attacks in their country. It also noted the successful practice of liberalizing the visa regime for Turkish visitors to certain islands, as a move that &#8220;brought a lot of money to local economies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/money-tourism.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/sete-moneytourism-4-scaled.jpeg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The president of SETE, Mr. Paraschis, emphasized that Greek tourism has an excellent starting point, with challenges and opportunities moving in parallel. For the future, he emphasized the need for investments &#8220;beyond the sun and the sea,&#8221; for qualitative development with an increase in per capita spending, and for diversification of products and destinations. &#8220;We all agree that investments are needed to expand the tourist season geographically and temporally,&#8221; he said.
