A comparison with competing Mediterranean destinations,&#8221; published in January 2026, is based on research by GWI, conducted in two waves in 2025 with a sample of 7,402 respondents, as well as in two waves in 2024. The focus of the research is on travelers&#8217; preferences for potential destinations for the next 12 months, covering the summer period, which is crucial for Greek tourism.<\/p>\n<p>According to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/insete.gr\/\">INSETE<\/a> <\/span>results, Greece ranks 3rd in preference for travel abroad for the German and Italian markets, 4th for France and the United Kingdom, and 6th for Spain. Compared to 2024, our country rose one position in the United Kingdom and Spain, while maintaining its position in the other markets. This development is considered particularly encouraging, as the United Kingdom and Germany have historically been the two strongest inbound tourism markets for Greece, both in terms of arrivals and revenue.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that the five markets being examined\u2014Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Spain, and Italy\u2014contribute almost half of the total revenue from incoming tourism, based on the Bank of Greece&#8217;s official data for the 2023\u20132024 period, is particularly significant. This finding makes maintaining Greece&#8217;s strong position in these markets of critical strategic importance for the industry&#8217;s future.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of competition, Greece is in the top five countries that travelers say they plan to visit in the next 12 months in all the markets under study, with the exception of Spain, where it ranks sixth. Even there, however, our country has improved its position compared to the previous year, confirming the positive dynamics of the Greek tourism product. The strong momentum is also indicated by the fact that in markets such as the United Kingdom and Spain, the preference difference between Greece and the countries that are one position ahead is only about two percentage points.<\/p>\n<p>In more detail, in Germany, Greece ranks third with a preference rate of 19.7%, behind Italy (26.8%) and Spain (24.9%), followed by Austria and France. In France, it is in fourth place with 12.6%, after Spain, Italy, and Portugal. In the United Kingdom, with a rate of 19.9%, it ranks fourth, behind Spain, Italy, and France. In Italy, Greece is third with 16.8%, while in Spain it is sixth with 9.5%.<\/p>\n<p>It is also noteworthy that in markets such as Italy and Spain, other competitive Mediterranean destinations, such as Croatia and Turkey, are outside the top ten. At the same time, Greece maintains a high position in the preferences of Western European travelers, despite the fact that its geographical location does not favor road access, unlike countries such as Italy, Spain, and France, which border each other and offer easier and more economical road trips. This fact reinforces the conclusion that Greece&#8217;s attractiveness is based on a strong, recognizable, and differentiated tourism product.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, INSETE&#8217;s General Director, Ilias Kikilias, emphasized that the Greek tourism brand has entered a phase of maturity, in an environment where competition in the Mediterranean is now structural and not circumstantial.
