The number of flight cancellations within Europe increased by 46% in June, compared to the previous month, according to new data from aviation analytics firm Cirium.
Last month, 8,145 flights were cancelled within Europe, up from 5,584 in May.
Meanwhile, flight cancellations in the Asia-Pacific region fell by 16% compared to the previous month.
Cirium’s on-time report said Icelandair was Europe’s most punctual carrier last month, with 84% of flights landing on time.
Iberia Express followed in second place, with almost 83% of all flights arriving on time, while Iberia came in third place, with almost 78% of flights arriving on time.
SAS and Finnair were also in the top five, with flight punctuality rates of 77% and 76%, respectively.
No UK airline was included in the top ten most consistent European carriers.
According to the report, several factors contributed to performance in the region, including the French air traffic control strike at the end of May, which resulted in thousands of flights being cancelled and routes being changed across Europe.
“Airlines across Europe, including Aer Lingus, faced staff shortages, particularly pilots and cabin crew, which led to more flight cancellations as airlines struggle to fully staff flights,” it said.
Globally, Saudia was named the most punctual airline in June, with 88% of flights arriving at their destination on time.
Aeromexico came in second place (86%), just ahead of Latam Airlines, which ranked third with almost 86% of flights arriving on time. JAL and Azul ranked fourth and fifth, with the on-time arrival of their flights at 85.1% and 84.8%, respectively.
Cirium defines an on-time flight as one that arrives at the destination airport within 15 minutes of its scheduled arrival time.
