Italy has sufficient aircraft fuel reserves to cover the operation of its airports at least until the end of May, according to Transport Minister Matteo Salvini, who appeared reassuring amid concerns about energy sufficiency in Europe.
As Salvini stated in the Italian parliament, the country is closely monitoring the supply chain at both national and European levels, with the aim of ensuring the smooth operation of the system throughout the summer period.
Market concerns are intensifying due to disruptions in fuel imports from the Middle East, as a result of the war in Iran. The situation has led to a significant increase in prices, as jet fuel has risen by almost 84% since the end of February, when the conflict began.
Despite the pressure, airlines so far seem to be managing the crisis without serious consequences to their operations.
The Italian minister emphasized that the country has larger reserves than other European countries and is not facing an immediate energy crisis. However, he called on the European Union to relax its fiscal rules so that member states can respond more effectively to the economic impact of the crisis.
At the same time, he reiterated the call for a revision of the Emissions Trading System (ETS), believing that such a move could contribute to reducing energy costs at the European level.
