Fraport Greece: 36 million passengers at 14 regional airports | Continuous growth in tourism

Fraport Greece announces its passenger traffic results for December 2024, as well as for the whole year, demonstrating its decisive contribution to the strengthening of the tourism product and, by extension, the Greek economy. The 14 airports served a total of 25 million passengers, while in 2024 this number reached 36 million passengers.

Increasing passenger traffic and continuous investment in the infrastructure of the 14 regional airports further enhances Greece’s position as a top destination, strengthening local communities and their development prospects.

Specifically, for December 2024, the 14 regional airports managed by Fraport Greece recorded an impressive increase in passenger traffic, welcoming a total of 805,056 passengers. This figure corresponds to a 6.7% increase compared to the same month in 2023, confirming the continuous upward trend in passenger flow, even during the winter months.

The upward trend of traffic in December is an important indicator of the positive climate that prevailed throughout 2024 and proof of the company’s strategic planning, which focuses on improving the travel experience, upgrading infrastructure and promoting Greece as a top tourist destination.

In total for 2024, Fraport Greece has achieved a major milestone, welcoming more than 36 million passengers at the 14 regional airports it operates. More specifically, passenger traffic increased by 6.4% compared to 2023, handling approximately 2.1 million more passengers. In this context, the number of domestic flights increased by 4.7% (86,026), the number of international flights increased by 4.2% (190,315), while overall (domestic and international flights) the increase reached 4.4%.

It is also noteworthy that in 2016 (the year in which the concession tender was completed), the 14 regional airports served a total of 25,008,965 passengers, while in 2024 this number reached 36,026,347 passengers, an increase of 44.1% or 11,017,382 more passengers, compared to the year before the concession. It is also noteworthy that between 2017 and 2024, more than 212.5 million passengers passed through the 14 airports, which underlines the company’s significant contribution to the support and sustainable development of Greek tourism.

Investment in infrastructure

In the direction of supporting and strengthening the domestic tourism product, Fraport Greece invests steadily in the infrastructure of the 14 regional airports, allocating annually amounts of up to €50 million for the upgrading and improvement of their facilities.

In addition, €146 million have been committed for the reconstruction and reconstruction of runways, in the context of strengthening the already high level of security. These projects, which are included in the Concession Agreement, are part of a wider large-scale programme being implemented by the company to comply with the new EASA (European Union Aviation Safety Agency) safety regulations. At the same time, Fraport Greece is planning additional investments of €200 million to increase the carrying capacity at the airports of Kos “Hippocrates”, Corfu “Ioannis Kapodistrias”, Mykonos and Santorini. These airports are approaching their capacity limits due to the significant increase in passenger traffic, which makes it necessary to further strengthen their infrastructure.
