In a list dominated by the islands of the Cyclades and the Ionian Islands for the summer holidays of all travellers visiting Greece, there are some quiet islands that do not attract the masses. Aegina tops the Times’ list, followed by Astypalaia.
The main thing that keeps crowds away from some islands is the difficulty of access. Islands with international airports (such as Crete, Rhodes, Kos and Mykonos) will always be more crowded than Milos, Syros and others served only by domestic flights. However, ferry connections also make a difference. The further the destinations are from Athens, the less crowded they will attract, which means that islands like Lipsi or Astypalaia are the quietest of all.

As for the island of Aegina, with the catamaran from the main port of Athens, the city of Piraeus, taking only half an hour. Surprisingly, its proximity is more of a deterrent than an attraction, as Aegina is barely attracting foreign holidaymakers. Its beaches are not so good although its prices are value for money.
Meanwhile, Astypalaia is an island that goes unnoticed on the route between Santorini and Kos. Of course, history lovers will find Roman baths, a Venetian castle, traditional windmills and a museum full of antiquities. Beach lovers will discover some of the clearest waters in Greece.
