From Athens, the journey to the best cities in Europe for every type of traveler begins, according to the new list by Condé Nast Traveler. The Greek capital is revealed as a top destination for history lovers, in a ranking that also includes Vienna, Paris, Antwerp, San Sebastian, Nice, Milan, London, and Copenhagen.
Athens is recommended as the ideal choice for those who want to immerse themselves in Europe’s past. A stroll through the cobblestone streets of Plaka, with the Acropolis as a backdrop, combines ancient monuments with modern urban life. The Parthenon, a symbol of nearly 2,500 years of history, remains the city’s ultimate landmark, while most of the findings are housed in the Acropolis Museum, which stands out for its architecture and the glass structure that “floats” above the excavations. Athens is presented as a city where antiquity is not a museum relic, but a living part of everyday life.
For art and classical music enthusiasts, Vienna is a constant value. The Austrian capital is home to the Kunsthistorisches Museum, which has one of the largest collections of European art, and its imperial past is reflected in palaces and museums such as the Albertina and the Belvedere, where Gustav Klimt’s “The Kiss” is on display.
On the other hand, for those traveling for gastronomic reasons, Paris remains a reference point. With more than 1,300 bakeries and patisseries, the French capital is perfect for “themed” journeys around croissants, baguettes, and creative pastries with high aesthetics.
Antwerp, Belgium, stands out for design and fashion enthusiasts, having evolved into a creative hub with new design hotels and a vibrant art scene, continuing the legacy of the “Antwerp Six” who put the city on the global fashion map.
For foodies, San Sebastián in Spain is considered a top gastronomic destination. The culture of pintxos and the high concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants make the city the Basque capital of flavor.
Nice is for sun and sea lovers, serving as a gateway to the French Riviera, while Milan is for fashionistas and shopping enthusiasts, with the Quadrilatero della Moda and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II being the “sacred” places of style.
London is added to the list as a destination for digital detox and wellness experiences, with new wellness centers and an emphasis on longevity and holistic care, while Copenhagen is recommended for families, combining gastronomy, street food markets, and attractions such as Tivoli Gardens.
The list highlights the diversity of Europe, noting that the selection of the “best city” ultimately depends on the traveler’s personal interests: history, art, taste, fashion, nature, or relaxation. At the top of historical experiences, however, Athens maintains its position as a timeless reference point.
