Airline confirms new cyberattack | Passengers’ data at hackers’ disposal

The Canadian airline WestJet is believed to have fallen victim to a cyberattack, resulting in hackers gaining access to the personal information of some passengers, although it is estimated that the breach did not involve “sensitive” data in most cases.

In a statement, WestJet said that a cybersecurity incident earlier this summer may have exposed some passenger personal information.

The airline said it detected suspicious activity on its systems on June 13, 2025, and concluded that it was the result of unauthorized access by “an advanced, criminal third party.”

He claimed that the preventive measures he took prevented the intruders from accessing customers’ credit and debit card numbers, expiration dates, and CVV numbers, and that no passwords were stolen.

However, it is a fact that some personal information of passengers was revealed, such as their name, their contact information, information and documents provided in relation to their reservation and their trip, as well as data regarding their relationship with WestJet.

The airline completed its review of the data that was breached on September 15, 2025.

According to the airline, certain additional security measures have been implemented for the systems and data. However, the investigation is ongoing and WestJet will continue to take measures to further strengthen its cybersecurity protocols.

The airline said it would contact affected customers to provide support and has posted instructions on its website.

He also said that he is cooperating with law enforcement authorities, including the US Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security. Simultaneously, it has informed other relevant authorities, such as the US credit rating companies TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax, the US state attorneys general, Transport Canada, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, and their counterparts at the provincial and international levels.

“We sincerely regret this situation and remain grateful for the support and patience of the thousands of passengers and WestJetters who have placed their trust in us,” the airline noted.
