Spain plans to follow France, another EU member state, in banning certain short domestic flights.
Under the government’s proposal, airlines would not be allowed to operate flights on routes where the train journey takes less than two and a half hours, unless they are connected to international flights at a central airport.
However, this is a weakening of its original proposal to ban flights on journeys that can be made by train in less than four hours.
The original proposal was expected to reduce the number of domestic flights by 50,000 a year, but the revised proposal is unlikely to have a significant impact.
France banned domestic flights last May for journeys that can be made by train in less than two and a half hours.
Spain’s government is also considering restricting the use of private jets, as well as taxing energy products, including aviation fuel.
The proposals have not yet been approved by the Senate, so there may be further amendments before they become law.
