These are the most affordable destinations in Europe for American travelers | And the most popular ones

Could the aviation fuel crisis, which is a result of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, have made travel to Europe more expensive for American travelers, with airfare prices—especially to classic Western European destinations such as Rome and Paris, which are also among the most popular—exceeding $2,100 for round trips? However, there are also some pleasant exceptions, according to the latest data from the Dollar Flight Club.

The leading U.S.-based flight deals platform analyzed more than 500,000 airfare data points from over 65 U.S. departure airports at the end of April, examining round-trip economy class prices for trips scheduled between June and August 2026, in order to determine which destinations offer travelers the best value for money.

Expensive but still beloved, Europe

According to Dollar Flight Club, airfare prices for the upcoming summer travel season to popular Western European cities such as Paris, Rome, London, Barcelona, and Frankfurt range from $1,700 to $2,100 for round-trip tickets—around 20% higher compared to last year.

However, travelers can find deals to cities such as Reykjavik, Dublin, and Stockholm, with low prices in the $350–$500 range for trips scheduled at the beginning of the season.

For Eastern European destinations such as Prague, Budapest, and Vienna, fares occasionally fall below $600, although availability is much more limited.

For Americans who can postpone their trip to late August, airfare is 30–40% cheaper to almost every European city, according to Jesse Neugarten, founder and CEO of Dollar Flight Club.

Classic European destinations remain at the top of American travelers’ preferences; however, at the same time, there is a shift toward shorter-haul coastal destinations and cooler climates. The fuel crisis is changing travel behavior, as are hotter summers at home.

The 5 most popular international destinations for Americans in summer 2026:

  • Rome, Italy
  • Paris, France
  • Tokyo, Japan
  • Cancún, Mexico
  • Reykjavik, Iceland

The most affordable international summer destinations for American travelers

The latest forecast from Dollar Flight Club also reveals excellent deals for the Caribbean, while Canadian destinations offer some of the best prices for Americans looking for cooler temperatures this summer.

For Mexico, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic, round-trip airfare starting at under $400 is available from a wide range of U.S. departure cities. Prices to these destinations remain relatively low because they are short-haul routes, operated by low-cost carriers, and are not affected by the fuel pressures impacting transatlantic flights.

Additionally, round-trip airfares starting at under $400 this summer are also available for Canadian cities such as Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, and Calgary.

Florida: a budget-friendly option

Domestic travel is serving as a safety net for Americans this summer, with Florida standing out. Airfares to Fort Lauderdale and Orlando are consistently offered below $150 round-trip from a wide range of East Coast and Midwest cities.

Texas airports (Dallas, Houston) follow closely behind

On the other hand, West Coast destinations tell a different story. Airports such as LAX, San Francisco, and San Diego do offer some deals, but with higher average prices ($335–$373). The real value for domestic flights this summer is found in the Southeast, the Gulf Coast, and the U.S. Midwest.

For travelers on a limited budget, the recommendation is to travel east rather than west. The suspension of operations by Spirit Airlines on May 2 is likely to affect prices in several of these markets, particularly Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, which were key hubs for Spirit. Airlines have offered temporary “rescue fares” of around $200 for stranded passengers, but base fares on former Spirit routes are expected to increase by 20–25% within 3–6 months, as low-cost carriers attempt to make up for lost capacity.TUI
