53% of American travelers who choose to visit their relatives during the holiday season reduce the duration of their trip. On the other hand, 63% of hosts consider this habit tiring, while 46% would prefer that travelers stay somewhere else. According to Hilton’s study and the changes that occur in family vacations, travelers have the opportunity to save up to 25% on a stay at Hilton.
Americans may return to their relatives for the holidays, but excessive cohabitation has its price. New data from Hilton shows that more than half of Americans who stay with relatives during the holidays find excuses to shorten their visit.
Hilton, in collaboration with Morning Consult, conducted a survey of 2,200 adults and found that 15% of Americans plan to spend the holidays with their family. The survey revealed the related disappointments during the most wonderful time of the year:
- 36% of visitors say they use inflatable mattresses for sleeping
- 32% reported that their sleep was worse when staying with relatives.
- 38% say they need time alone within just 24 hours of arrival.
- 25% say they eat breakfast even if they don’t like it.
- The top most disappointing holiday traditions when visiting family include mandatory hours of sleep (44%), matching clothes (43%), and obligatory group activities (39%).
- 53% of people say they have found excuses to reduce their stay with relatives during the holidays.
Those who participated in the survey reported that special beds, private bathrooms, and personal space are the amenities they want most when traveling for vacation. But it’s not just the traveler who feels the stress – hosting loved ones leaves 63% of hosts exhausted, and nearly half (46%) say they would enjoy the time more if the guests were staying somewhere else.
Hilton gives consumers another reason to book a vacation-like stay: the Hilton Sale, available for bookings now through December 15 for stays between November 12 and April 6, 2026.
