The Times has announced the list of the 28 ideal destinations for holidays of all types and preferences in Greece, with the island of Andros in first place.
According to the British newspaper, its beautiful seas and beaches, stunning islands and mountainous landscapes, traditional villages, historic towns, excellent food and wine, unique archaeological sites, vibrant nightlife, clear skies and starry nights make it a country worth visiting again and again.
“Beyond the well-known destinations such as Athens, Crete, Mykonos and Santorini, there are a variety of tempting places that suit any type of holiday. So whether you’re looking for a dynamic or relaxing break, a family getaway or a couples’ retreat, close to major attractions or away from the crowds, this is our round-up of the best places to visit in Greece,” the Times points out.
The top spot in the 2024 ranking is found in Andros, which is recommended for walking as it has miles of ancient paths winding through the island’s densely wooded hills and mountain villages.
Corfu is in second place, with its impressive landscapes, followed by Kefalonia for unique excursions, Hydra for cosmopolitan holidays, Evia for lovers of “Old Greece”, Aegina, which is combined with a visit to Athens, Kos, a family-friendly destination, Kythnos for back in time escapes, Lefkada, an ideal choice for water sports, and the top ten is completed by Zagorochoria, which is recommended for beautiful walks in the mountains of Tymfi.
The next ten are Meganissi for escapes from everyday life, Milos, the land of wonders and colours, Naxos with its kilometres of sandy beaches and remarkable hiking network, Patmos with its eerie atmosphere, Paxos with its olive groves and sea caves, Spetses which attracts the world’s elite, sunny Rhodes with its ancient and medieval sights, Sifnos which is ideal for lovers of good food, Skopelos for those seeking relaxation and walks and Skiathos with its golden sandy beaches.
The last eight places are followed by Poros which is ideal for meals on the waterfront, Symi with its postcard-like port, Pelion with its unique beauty throughout the year, Halkidiki which is famous for its luxury resorts, Mani which is recommended for something completely different, Tilos which is a haven for wildlife, Kythera with its gorges and waterfalls and Kalymnos the island of climbing.
