Greece among the top European destinations for authentic holidays

Greece is among the top destinations in Europe for holidays in 2026, offering travelers substantial, authentic and less digital experiences and disconnected holidays, according to a new survey by Inghams Walking.

Greece is specifically in the second place on Inghams Walking’s list of European destinations that guarantee travel away from screens and promise a deeper connection with the destination, interaction with local communities and contact with nature.

The trend of taking a break, which is on the rise and has dominated social media, reflects the desire for a break from everyday life in destinations that offer relaxation, contact with nature, authentic moments and a meaningful disconnection from screens and modern technology. This is reflected in the fact that over the last year, there has been a 1,100% increase in online searches for authentic travel.

However, the trend towards authentic travel does not mean that we completely abandon technology; it means that we create more space away from it. As a result, film cameras, printed photos, and handwritten diaries are making a comeback, with people swapping their smartphones for digital cameras and note-taking apps for notebooks and pens.

In essence, this type of travel is about living in the present, without notifications, filters, and distractions, and truly analog destinations have a rich cultural profile – from museums, landmarks, and day trips – creating travel experiences that prioritize human connection and mindfulness over screen time.

Greece, with a total score of 75.2 out of 100, is in second place behind Italy, which tops the ranking with 83.5 points. Meanwhile, the first five are completed by Croatia with 74.7, Austria with 66.7 and Montenegro with 61.8.

Italy is in first place due to its rich cultural heritage, as the country has over 10,000 attractions and monuments to explore, as well as 722 museums, offering the perfect setting for a conscious getaway.

Greece is in second place, with over 900 sights and monuments and 75 museums, offering a rich mix of culture, ancient history and nature, which facilitate disconnection from screens.

In fact, Greece recorded the lowest high-speed broadband coverage among the top 15 destinations, making the country an ideal choice for travelers seeking screen-free vacations.

The research also found that Greece offers more than 3,550 screen-free activities for travelers. From ceramics and marble workshops in Athens to hiking in the Samaria Gorge in Crete and island hopping in the Cyclades, analog experiences in Greece are deeply rooted in tradition, making it the right place for a culturally-focused digital detox.

Additionally, the National Park of Ainos in Kefalonia took the 3rd place in the ranking of the best places for stargazing, offering travelers another opportunity to disconnect completely.

Spain, Latvia, Portugal, France, Finland, Germany, Scotland, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Estonia are also among the top 15 countries for holidays.

To create the ranking of the best destinations in Europe that are friendly to this tourism model, Inghams Walking analyzed thousands of data points from each country, taking into account:

The number of available screen-free activities, such as day trips and cultural tours

The number of national parks

The number of museums

The number of sights and monuments

Population density

Internet use

High-speed broadband coverage (the lower, the better in this case)

Next, the performance of each country was calculated proportionally per 100,000 inhabitants to ensure that the comparison with smaller and larger countries is objective.
