In one of the largest strategic expansions in its history, Airbnb is transforming from a short-term rental platform into a comprehensive travel ecosystem, adding new services, experiences, boutique hotels, car rentals, airport transfers, and even artificial intelligence tools that aim to change the way travelers plan their trips.
The company’s new strategy marks a clear expansion of its business model, as Airbnb now seeks to cover every stage of the travel journey: from booking accommodation and local experiences to transportation, dining, luggage handling, and digital travel planning.
From Airbnb accommodation to a full travel platform
Airbnb notes that as early as 2025 it had already paved the way with the introduction of Experiences and Services, allowing users not only to book accommodation but also to access local activities and personalized services.
Now, this model is being expanded even more aggressively.
As stated by Brian Chesky, co-founder and CEO of Airbnb: “Travel is not enough to be convenient. It must have substance and meaning. The best trips are those where you explore, learn, and return different from when you left.”
The message is clear: Airbnb wants to become much more than just an accommodation platform.
New services for the entire trip
The new service portfolio includes:
Car rental
Users will now be able to rent a car directly through the Airbnb app.
The platform will display available vehicles near the accommodation and suggest options based on the needs of the trip.
Airport transfers
In partnership with Welcome Pickups, Airbnb is integrating private airport transfer services.
The service is already available in more than 160 cities worldwide.
Grocery delivery
Guests will be able to pre-order grocery items so that they are waiting at the accommodation upon arrival.
The service is launching in the United States through a partnership with Instacart.
Luggage storage
Through a partnership with Bounce, Airbnb offers access to more than 15,000 luggage storage locations across 175 cities.
Boutique hotels on Airbnb
One of the most strategic moves involves the addition of independent and boutique hotels to the platform.
Airbnb announced that it will add thousands of hotels in top destinations such as:
- New York
- Paris
- London
- Madrid
- Rome
- Singapore
This represents a significant shift, as Airbnb for years positioned itself against the traditional hotel model.
The new strategy shows that it is now seeking collaboration and coexistence with specific segments of the hotel industry.
Experiences and FIFA 2026
Airbnb is also strengthening its travel experiences.
Among the new offerings are:
- guided tours of top attractions
- premium culinary experiences
- exclusive FIFA World Cup 2026 events
These include:
- viewing events with Abby Wambach and Julie Foudy
- a football experience with Javier Mascherano
Airbnb is clearly investing in the experiential travel segment.
Artificial Intelligence in travel planning
Special emphasis is being placed on AI.
Airbnb is integrating:
- AI-generated review summaries
- smart comparison tools
- collaborative itinerary planning
- a social travel map
- an AI customer support assistant
The goal is for the app to function as a complete digital travel companion.
“Book now, pay later”
Greater flexibility in payments is also a key part of the new strategy.
Airbnb is moving toward models that allow more flexible payment behavior, adapted to new travel consumer habits.
Strategic message
Airbnb’s move carries broader significance for the travel market.
The company:
- is entering the OTA ecosystem more aggressively
- is moving into services traditionally controlled by other players
- is approaching the “super app for travel” model
The critical question is how the following will respond:
- Booking.com
- Expedia
- hotel chains
- mobility providers
- destination platforms
Airbnb is clearly signaling that the battle is no longer about accommodation. It is about the entire journey.
