EES Rollout at Greek Airports: Fraport Greece Supports Transition to New EU Border System

The gradual implementation of the Entry/Exit System (EES), introduced under the European Union’s Smart Borders framework, marks a significant shift in how non-EU travellers are processed at external borders across Europe. The system, which is being deployed in 29 countries, replaces traditional passport stamping with a fully digital process that includes biometric data collection.

In Greece, the development and operation of the EES infrastructure fall under the responsibility of the Hellenic Police. However, Fraport Greece is playing a key supporting role, working closely with the competent authorities to facilitate a smooth transition and ensure that passenger flows remain as efficient as possible.

At this stage, the EES process is conducted exclusively at passport control points and involves the collection of biometric identifiers, including fingerprints and facial data. According to available information, technical testing by the Hellenic Police is currently ongoing, focusing on the proper interconnection and functionality of the system. These tests are expected to be completed in the near future, paving the way for full operational readiness.

Despite the progress, passenger processing times are currently longer compared to standard procedures, particularly during peak travel periods. This is largely due to the additional steps required for biometric registration and system validation.

To mitigate these challenges, Fraport Greece has implemented a series of measures aimed at improving the passenger experience. These include enhanced airport signage to guide travellers through the new procedures, increased staff presence at key points, and continuous coordination with the Hellenic Police to manage passenger flows effectively.

Airport teams remain actively engaged throughout the passenger journey, providing assistance, addressing queries, and helping to reduce congestion during this transition phase.

As the transition progresses, Fraport Greece reiterates its commitment to supporting passengers and ensuring that airport operations continue to run as smoothly as possible, with every effort being made to minimize inconvenience and enhance overall efficiency.EES
