In May 2025, accommodation establishments in Germany recorded 47.5 million overnight stays by domestic and foreign guests. According to preliminary results from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), this was 2.6 percent less than in May 2024.
Concern has been raised about the downward trend that has appeared in May 2025, based on data from DRV. One reason for this decline could be the later Whitsun holidays in some federal states this year, which were predominantly in May in 2024 and predominantly in June in 2025.
The number of overnight stays by domestic guests decreased by 3.3% to 40.0 million in May 2025 compared to the same month last year. In contrast, the number of overnight stays by foreign guests increased by 1.5 percent to 7.6 million.
In the first five months of 2025, accommodation establishments recorded a total of 173.0 million overnight stays, slightly less (-0.8 percent) than in the same period of the record year 2024. The number of overnight stays by domestic guests fell by 0.9 percent to 144.3 million compared to January to May 2024, while the number of overnight stays by foreign guests fell by 0.3 percent to 28.7 million.
