Greece dominates the ranking by European Best Destinations (EBD) of the best European beaches for this year, with five Greek coastlines featured in the top ten.
Europe is home to some of the most impressive beaches in the world and a diverse coastline, ranging from the white sandy beaches of the Greek islands and the iconic shores of the Mediterranean to the wild Atlantic coasts, volcanic beaches, and hidden lagoons.
European coastlines were evaluated based on a range of criteria such as natural beauty, water quality, accessibility, services, family-friendliness, available activities, authenticity of the landscape, environmental preservation, the quality of nearby accommodation, and the overall atmosphere.
This year’s ranking highlights beaches that offer more than just beauty — places where travellers can disconnect from everyday stress, reconnect with nature, and experience some of Europe’s most inspiring coastal landscapes.
Greece has a strong presence in the ranking, which includes five Greek beaches: Voutoumi Beach in Antipaxos in second place, Fteri Beach in Kefalonia in third place, Elafonissi Beach in Crete in fourth place, and two beaches in Corfu — Rovinia and Paleokastritsa — in eighth and tenth place respectively.
In first place stands Monte Clérigo Beach in the Algarve, located at the southwestern tip of Portugal.
According to EBD, the beach is increasingly attracting travellers seeking authenticity, nature, and understated luxury away from overcrowded resorts. It is distinguished by its wild Atlantic landscapes and unforgettable sunsets.
Why the Greek beaches stand out
EBD has placed Greek beaches among the top-ranked Best Beaches in Europe for their unique beauty. Specifically, it states:
Voutoumi Beach is known for its crystal-clear turquoise waters and fine white pebbles, creating a serene and picturesque setting. The beach is embraced by lush green hills, offering visitors a peaceful escape.
Fteri Beach is a secluded paradise beach with white pebbles and crystal-clear turquoise waters, surrounded by impressive white cliffs. Its remote location offers tranquillity and unspoiled natural beauty.
Elafonissi is famous for its pink sand and clear, shallow waters, creating a unique and picturesque landscape. The beach is part of a protected nature reserve, offering a serene environment.
Rovinia is a secluded pebble beach with crystal-clear waters, surrounded by lush vegetation and cliffs. Accessible either by sea or via a hiking trail, it offers a peaceful and unspoiled setting.
Paleokastritsa is not only one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, but also a renowned destination on the island of Corfu, distinguished by its crystal-clear waters and scenic surroundings. The area features multiple coves and beaches, each offering unique views and experiences.
