Greek National Tourism Organization: Promotion of Santorini in target markets for Greek tourism

The Greek National Tourism Organization (EOT) is implementing immediate promotional activities to positively promote Santorini in Greece’s target tourist markets on the initiative of the organization’s secretary general, Andreas Fiorentinou, in collaboration with the island’s mayor, Nikos Zorzos.

In this context, Claus Hindebrandt, editor-in-chief of Germany’s leading tourism magazine, FVW (fvw.de), and Sylvia Raschke, journalist for the equally influential Touristik Aktuell (touristik-aktuell.de), have been visiting the island since April 24.

The two German journalists, accompanied by Nikoleta Lekani, head of the Greek National Tourism Organization in Germany, which organized the press trip, were given a tour of the island’s top attractions, visited archaeological sites and wineries, and took a boat tour of the caldera and the volcano.

They also met with Mr. Zorz, who gave them an interview in the presence of the president of the Municipal Council, Georgia Nomikou. The mayor of Santorini presented the comparative advantages of the island, apart from its rare geomorphology, emphasizing its long historical and cultural heritage, the possibilities it offers for walking tourism, such as the trails from Fira to Oia, Perissa to Ancient Thera, etc., its great wine tradition, and its exceptional agricultural production, which includes unique products (special varieties of eggplant, tomatoes, etc.).

Mr. Zorzos emphasized that the island has an annual capacity of 3.6 million visitors while also referring to the pioneering program implemented by the municipality to avoid overcrowding, with scheduled cruise ship arrivals each day limited to 8,000 per day. He also made extensive references to the neighboring island of Thirasia, which has two settlements, is ideal for gentle tourism, and where the ancient settlement of the early Bronze Age was recently discovered.

The press trip ends today (28/4), and the articles on Santorini will be published in May 2025, highlighting the uniqueness of the island and the excellent preparation of the local authorities to welcome travelers.

Romanian journalists from Ant 3 – CNN and TukTuk, the country’s most important media outlets, also traveled to Santorini on a press trip organized by the Greek National Tourism Organization in Romania from April 23 to 26.

The Romanian journalists during an interview with representatives of the island’s tourist organizations.

During their stay on the island, the Romanian press delegation had the opportunity to record the main attractions and experiences it offers (Prehistoric Museum of Thera, Akrotiri, beaches, wineries, etc.) and also held interviews with Mr. Zorzos and representatives of tourism organizations, during which it was emphasized that Santorini remains a completely safe tourist destination, ready to welcome its numerous visitors.

The relevant reports are expected to be broadcast in the coming weeks, as the Romanian tourist market is particularly interested in the situation on the island ahead of the summer season.

In May, the EOT plans to implement other related actions in the markets of Serbia, the United Kingdom, Ireland, North America, France, the Netherlands, and Italy, with the aim of intensifying the promotion of positive aspects of tourism in Greece. The aim is to intensify the promotion of positive messages about Santorini as a top destination and to further strengthen confidence in international markets.
