Hilton Athens: Acceleration of works for the creation of a new mixed-use destination in the heart of the city

HOTELS

The building complex currently home to Hilton Athens is undergoing a complete transformation, for the development of a new multidimensional destination that will combine multiple uses. This is a strategic investment by Ionian Hotel Enterprises (IHE), which aims to contribute further to establishing Athens among the top choices in Europe to travel or live.

The new destination introduces a mixed-use development, which will feature a luxury hotel along with residences, a lifestyle members’ club, multiple culinary and entertainment venues, curated shopping, thus creating an ecosystem of unique experiences.

hiltonThe new model is expected to add significant value to Athens’ tourism landscape and support local economy, while contributing to the upgrade of the surrounding area.

The development of the new destination requires a material reconstruction of the existing building to accommodate the new uses, and to apply best sustainable practices in line with the international LEED Gold certification. During the construction works, up to 800 people are expected to be employed, while at full operation of the new destination, more than 600 employment positions will be created.

Τhe reconstruction will consist of:

  • the development of a new luxury hotel under the Conrad brand, with 280 rooms and suites
  • the development of 50 luxury residences under the Conrad Residences and Waldorf Astoria Residences brands
  • the complete redevelopment of the top floor, to house new gastronomy and entertainment venues
  • an extension by the pool that has also been part of the initial architectural design of the 60s
  • the development of curated retail spaces, entertainment and wellness areas, and a lifestyle members’ club spanning 5,500sq.m.

This large-scale project will preserve and further enhance the building’s architectural legacy and the timeless façades crafted by Yannis Moralis. The construction works are ongoing since the end of 2020 across different hotel sections which closed down, and the entire reconstruction is expected to be completed towards the end of 2024.

Due to the extensive volume of works, and in order to ensure the safety of associates and guests, a parallel hotel operation has become impossible, therefore it will cease operations on January 31, 2022.

In the light of this circumstance, and considering multiple socioeconomic criteria, IHE is offering to its associates a specially designed voluntary exit plan which will conclude by end of January 2022.

In addition, those associates who wish to, will have the opportunity to apply and be reviewed for job openings in other tourism activities of the Group, such as for the new hotel opening in Costa Navarino, or for the new mixed-used destination in Athens that will commence operation towards the end of 2024.
