INSETE: 5.7% increase in air arrivals in the five-month period | Revenue up 12.7% in the same period

The average expenditure of tourists in the first months of 2025 is higher compared to the same period last year.

Specifically, in the first five months of 2025, Greece welcomed 10.3 million visitors who spent a total of 2.15 billion euros, according to INSETE data.

During the period January–June 2025, 10.3 million international air arrivals were recorded, showing an increase of +556 thousand/+5.7% compared to the same period in 2024.

During the first quarter of 2025, a total of 1.7 million international air arrivals were recorded, compared to 1.6 million in the same quarter of 2024, representing an increase of +76 thousand/+4.7%.

Specifically, in January, 529 thousand arrivals were recorded, showing an increase of +44 thousand/+9.1%. In February, international arrivals totaled 487,000 (+25,000/+5.5%), while in March they totaled 663,000, showing a marginal increase of +7,000/+1.1%. The second quarter of 2025 saw a larger increase, with 8.6 million arrivals compared to 8.1 million in 2024, recording a +480 thousand increase/+5.9%. Specifically, in April, there were 1.6 million arrivals, an increase of +122 thousand/+8.4%.

In May, international arrivals reached 3.0 million, an increase of +153 thousand/+5.3%. Finally, in June, 4.0 million arrivals were recorded, showing an increase of +206 thousand/+5.4% compared to June 2024.

During the same period, 3.8 million arrivals were recorded at Athens International Airport, representing an increase of +335,000 or +9.6%. Followed by Thessaloniki with 1.2 million arrivals (+94,000/+8.7%).



Over 1.0 million arrivals were recorded in Rhodes, an increase of +9,000/+0.9%, while in Kos 452,000, showing an increase of +14,000/+3.2%. In contrast, 25,000 arrivals were recorded in Karpathos, a decrease of -4,000 (-14.4%). In Heraklion, arrivals totaled 1.4 million, up 74,000 or 5.7%, while in Chania, 544,000 were recorded, up 12,000 or 2.3%. In Corfu, 666,000 international arrivals were recorded (+33,000/+5.1%) and in Zakynthos 343,000, an increase of +16,000/+4.9%. In Kefalonia, arrivals totaled 121,000, an increase of 5,000 or 4.2%, while in Actio, 132,000 were recorded, an increase of 6,000 or 4.8%. 1,390,000 arrivals were recorded in Mykonos, an increase of 2,000/1.5%, while 189,000 were recorded in Santorini, a decrease of 44,000/-19.1%.

In Kalamata, 56,000 arrivals were recorded, an increase of +4,000/+6.8%. In Araxos, 25,000 arrivals were recorded, an increase of +4,000/+16.7%. In Skiathos, 86,000 international arrivals were recorded, a marginal increase of +0.4%. In contrast, Samos saw 43 mm, a decrease of -2 mm / -4.6%. In Kavala, international air arrivals were 38,000, a marginal increase of +0.2%. Finally, in Mytilene, 25,000 arrivals were recorded, showing a marginal decrease of -0.2%

From January to May 2025, inbound travel increased by +2.1% and reached 7,089,000 travelers, compared to 6,944,000 travelers during the same period in 2024. During the period under review, travel from EU-27 countries amounted to 3.813 million travelers, a decrease of -5.1% compared to the same period in 2024, while travel from other countries increased by +12.0% and amounted to 3.277 million travelers.

Travel from eurozone countries decreased by -0.5%, while travel from non-eurozone EU-27 countries decreased by -19.3%. Specifically, travel from Germany increased by +1.5% and amounted to 1,080,000 travelers, while travel from France decreased by -27.1% and amounted to 342,000 travelers. The number of travelers from Italy also fell by -11.7%, with 312,000 travelers. Regarding non-EU-27 countries, travel from the UK increased by +6.7% to 711,000 travelers, while travel from the US increased by +18.1% to 463,000.

Revenues

From January to April 2025, travel receipts recorded a +10.6% increase compared to the same period in 2024, reaching €2.157 billion. This development is mainly due to the +26.0% increase in revenue from residents of other countries, which amounted to €1,040 million, while revenue from residents of EU-27 countries decreased by -1.8% and amounted to €1,026 million.

More specifically, the revenue from residents of the eurozone countries amounted to

€862 million, a decrease of -5.7%, while revenue from residents of EU-27 countries outside the eurozone increased by +25.4% and amounted to €164 million. Specifically, revenue from Germany increased by +0.8% and amounted to €297 million, while revenue from France decreased by -25.0% and amounted to €110 million. Revenue from Italy also decreased by -6.6%, reaching €110 million. From other countries, revenue from the United Kingdom increased by +23.4% and amounted to €168 million, while revenue from the US increased by +36.8% and amounted to €325 million.

From January to May 2025, travel receipts recorded a +12.7% increase compared to the same period in 2024, reaching €4.352 billion. This development is due to both an increase in revenue from residents of EU-27 countries by +10.9%, which amounted to €2,327 million, and an increase in revenue from residents of other countries by +15.1%, which amounted to €1,813 million. In more detail, revenue from residents of the eurozone countries amounted to €1,880 million, an increase of +3.6%, while revenue from residents of the EU-27 countries outside the eurozone increased by +57.2% and amounted to €447 million.

Specifically, revenue from Germany rose by +9.9% and amounted to €772 million, while revenue from France fell by -7.8% and amounted to €264 million. Revenue from Italy also decreased by -4.8%, reaching €165 million. From other countries, revenue from the United Kingdom increased by +13.3% and amounted to €481 million, while revenue from the US increased by +15.9% and amounted to €457 million.
