Crete continues to be a top destination for the German market, with demand for vacations on the island remaining strong and connectivity further enhanced in 2026.
According to a report by the German media outlet Augsburger Allgemeine, more German airports are adding Crete to their flight schedules, offering travelers more flexibility and more direct access options, mainly to the Heraklion airport, but also to Chania.
The largest Greek island attracts a large number of visitors from Germany every year, thanks to its mild climate, high sunshine almost all year round, and the possibility of various activities, such as beaches, water sports, hiking, sightseeing, and gastronomic experiences. To accommodate the growing passenger traffic, a new airport is being built near Heraklion, which is intended to replace the existing international airport.
The 2026 summer schedule adds Friedrichshafen Airport, from which direct flights to Heraklion will operate from March 29 to October 24, with departures twice a week. Flights are scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday, departing at 18:30 or 09:45, according to the airport’s schedule.
Simultaneously, the Rostock-Laage Airport is adding direct flights to Crete in October, which will be operated by Corendon Airlines from October 6 to 30, twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays. Additionally, Erfurt-Weimar Airport is expanding its destination portfolio, offering flights to Heraklion from July to the end of October, every Monday and Thursday.
The availability of direct flights from Germany to Heraklion varies by month, reflecting the demand of the tourist season. Based on data for 2026, direct connections include:
Berlin, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Hannover, Cologne, Leipzig, Munich, Nuremberg, Stuttgart, Bremen, Dresden, Friedrichshafen, Münster, Baden-Baden, Memmingen, Paderborn, Saarbrücken, Erfurt, and Rostock.
Specifically, since March, there have been direct flights from major hubs such as Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich, Düsseldorf, and Hamburg, while in the spring and summer, regional airports such as Bremen, Dresden, Münster, Memmingen, and Paderborn will be added. During peak months, July and August, the network expands further with the addition of airports such as Erfurt, while Rostock is added in October.
The data is based on information from the Skyscanner travel website, with the note that flight schedules may change depending on demand and airline scheduling.
The strengthening of direct connections is expected to further support the flow of German visitors to Crete and contribute to maintaining the strong presence of the German market in Greek tourism.
