The Regional Programme “South Aegean 2021 – 2027” includes the upgrading of the archaeological site and the museum of Delos

The inclusion in the “South Aegean 2021 – 2027” Programme of the second phase of the upgrading of the archaeological site and museum of Delos, with a total public expenditure of 4,325,714.22 €, was signed by the South Aegean Regional Governor, George Hadjimarkos.

In particular, the Act “Delos – Open Museum. Upgrading interventions in the archaeological site and the museum – Phase B”, the project is part of the programme “South Aegean 2021 – 2027” and is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The co-financed public expenditure amounts to 4.325.714,22 €

Delos was one of the most important sites of the ancient Greek world. Today it is an extensive, uniquely important declared archaeological site, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The second phase of the project includes the conservation and enhancement of selected monuments of the archaeological site and the qualitative upgrading of the visitor’s experience in the museum areas. More specifically, the following interventions are foreseen:


  • Restoration, fixing, restoration and promotion in: Temple of Apollo, Sanctuary, Granite Palaestra, House of Diadomenos.
  • The platform for the classification of architectural elements and the access road to the Sanctuary.
  • Development of visitor routes to the Sanctuary, the Theatre and Lake District.
  • Signage on the landscaped routes and information signs at the redesignated monuments.
  • Supply and installation of a tactile map.
  • Formation of a new construction warehouse to house the Agency’s machinery.

The archaeological museum provides:

– Final repair work on the building shell (fire doors, north atrium frames), and completion of the configuration/equipment/renovation of the museum areas (sanitary facilities, electrical installations, shading systems, entrance furniture). Exhibition upgrading.

– Preparation of a final design for the enhancement of the sanctuary

– Printed information material in Braille.

– Printed information material for the dissemination of the results of the project (Greek and English).

In addition, the costs for the organisation of the construction site and the equipment for the operation of the project are included.

The end date of the project is 30/06/2028.

The beneficiary of the project is the Ministry of Culture – Ephorate of Cyclades Antiquities.
