UN Tourism: Fashion plays a dominant role in promoting cultural tourism

Tourism and fashion ties are strengthened with the collaboration of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism) and the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI), which aims to highlight inspiring examples of how fashion can promote cultural tourism, boost local trade, and spark innovation in destinations around the world.

Following the joint report “Fashion and Cultural Tourism – Connecting Creators, Businesses and Destinations”, USI and UNWTO organized a hybrid workshop to strengthen the ties between the fashion and tourism sectors.

The information presented in Lugano was aimed at policymakers and researchers, as well as professionals in the fields of product development, marketing, and communication working for national tourism authorities, destination management organizations, and fashion companies.

3.1% of the global GDP in cultural and creative industries

Creative industries are increasingly recognized as key drivers of tourism development. Cultural and creative industries currently contribute 3.1% of global GDP and 6.2% of global employment, making them a powerful force for tourism development.

From music and film to design and fashion, these industries represent a great opportunity for cultural tourism around the world.

Good practices were presented at the event by the Tuscany Tourism Board (Italy), the Ljubljana Tourism Board (Slovenia), and the Lugano Lifestyle Technology Skills Center (Switzerland).

Successful stories of integrating fashion into cultural tourism offerings from Indonesia, Lebanon, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, the Republic of Korea, Saudi Arabia, Spain, and Tanzania also contributed to the exchange of diverse and innovative approaches.
