Mallorca in a frenzy | Local organisations are up in arms about over-tourism

Mallorca looks like a boiling pot, as local organizations, institutions and residents rise up to demand measures and discuss proposals against mass tourism, including the occupation of the city’s airport in protest, as it emerged during the recent meeting of the initiative “Menys Turisme, més vida” (“Less tourism, more life”).

At the meeting, held by Menys Turisme, més vida, in Sineu, in the “heart” of Mallorca, with the participation of over 300 people, there was applause and cheers for the idea of mobilising at the airport to stop the operation of flights.

However, the voice of reason seemed to prevail, at least for the moment, as some people warned of the legal risks of occupying the airport.

Other protest actions and proposals mentioned at the event, which took place last Friday, were the restriction of rental cars, the regulation of access to housing, the unification of trade unions and the occupation of public spaces.

At the end of the meeting, the organisers announced a new, mass demonstration, in addition to the one already planned for 25 May by the organisation for the collective Banc del Temps de Sencelles, under the slogan “Mallorca no es ven” (Mallorca is not for sale), without, however, setting a specific date.

They also invited participants to submit further proposals by email.
