Although inflation continues to put pressure on the budgets of American travelers, it seems that “bargain hunting” is not a top priority when it comes to summer getaways this year.
New data from airline ticket search engine Skyscanner shows that 52% of US travellers said they knew there were cheaper weeks to travel this summer when they booked their holiday. However, just 4% of travellers chose to take advantage of the cheaper travel options.
According to Skyscanner, this means that 96% of US travelers are “missing out on the best travel deals this summer.”
But when is the best time, during this summer, for American travelers to find cheap, airline tickets?
Again, the experts at Skyscanner have the answer: The first week of July is the most popular – and the most expensive – holiday period this summer. By contrast, August 19 is the most budget-friendly time to travel (at least in terms of booking airline tickets).
Skyscanner data shows that on average, American travelers can save 29% by traveling the week of August 19 instead of the week of July 1. The average savings on airfare, making this change in time frame, for a family of four is $1,064.
Skyscanner reports that nearly a third (34%) of US travelers have not yet booked their summer vacation and are still looking for deals.
It seems that many would-be travellers are indecisive about dates (43%) and destinations (41%) when it comes to finalising their summer plans.
