Worst airport in Europe is Diagoras in Rhodes and second last in the world

AirHelp, a passenger rights organisation, has published its annual global ranking of airports in which Rhodes airport is the worst in Europe and second last in the world.

The air hub of the Greek island scored 6.05, with 5.8 to be exact. This score puts it in 249th place, one place above the world’s worst airport by these metrics, Tunis airport.

As for the best airports in Greece, Thessaloniki is at the top with a score of 7.38/10, Athens second with 7.22/10 and Heraklion third with 6.32/10.

And, while major hubs such as Paris’ Charles de Gaulle and London’s Gatwick failed to impress, several smaller European airports stood out for their reliability and customer service.

Which airports are the best in Europe?

The best performing airport in Europe overall was Bergen Flusland in Norway, which was ranked 9th in the world and topped the list of European airports in terms of punctuality.

Other high scoring airports in Europe were Bilbao Airport in the Basque region of Spain (16th place), Bodø Airport (Norway – 23rd place) and Oslo Airport, Gardermoen (28th place), also in Norway, and Reykjavík Keflavík Airport in Iceland (30th place).

Despite ranking 130th overall, Luxembourg airport scored 9.0 points for customer opinion, which puts it at the top of all other European airports in this category, while Amsterdam Schiphol airport (111th overall) scored the highest in Europe for food and beverage, scoring 8.3 points.

Meanwhile, and perhaps unsurprisingly, given the recent air traffic control strikes and criticism of the country’s performance, France’s top-rated airport, Toulouse-Blagnac, was ranked only 101st in the world.

However, it topped the French list for the second year running, earning solid scores for punctuality and customer satisfaction, although it scored slightly lower for shopping and dining. In 181st place, Paris Charles de Gaulle performed poorly across all metrics, with frequent delays and low customer ratings bringing down its score.

London Gatwick ranked 235th, with low scores in all areas.

How the ranking was calculated

AirHelp’s methodology gives the most weight – 60 percent – to on-time performance, based on flights departing or arriving within 15 minutes of their scheduled time. Rhodes Diagoras’ 5.8 on-time score, for example, translates to 58 percent of flights running on schedule.

The remaining 40% is evenly split between passenger comments on airport staff, cleanliness and general experience, as well as services on offer, such as restaurants and retail.

Most of the data was collected from multiple vendors and cross-checked with statistics from government agencies, airports, flight tracking vendors and historical sources. To gather user reviews, AirHelp surveyed travelers in more than 58 countries and collected more than 13,500 unique airport reviews.

The rankings cover only airports with a significant number of international flights, using data collected from 1 June 2024 to 31 May 2025.

While delays and cancellations are often beyond an airport’s control, the highest performing airports tend to be those that combine operational efficiency with attentive service and clear communication.

According to AirHelp’s findings, travellers looking to reduce their stress this summer may prefer smaller regional airports in Scandinavia, where the chances of a smooth journey are significantly better than at the continent’s larger transport hubs.
