ETC: Greece in the top choices of Europeans for travel in 6 months October ’24 – March ’25 | In the top 5 choices of Austrians, British and French

Greece is included in the top ten European destinations that Europeans choose to travel to between October 2024 and March 2025, garnering a 4.5% share, with Austrian, British and French travellers supporting our country, placing it in the top 5 of their preferences. This is revealed in the latest European Travel Commission (ETC) survey.

According to the “Monitoring Sentiment for Intra-European Travel” survey, Greece is in sixth place in European travellers’ preferences for intra-European travel, with Spain (6.9%), France (6.8%) and Italy (6.2%) maintaining the top three positions, while Germany (4.8%) and Austria (4.7%) complete the top five. Croatia is lowest in seventh place (4.1%), the United Kingdom in eighth (3.9%) and Portugal (3.8%) and Belgium (3.4%) complete the top ten.

Greece fourth choice for Austrians, British and French

Greece is the fourth most popular choice in the German, British and French markets. In particular, 5% of Austrians have plans to visit Greece in the period under review, while 4% of Austrians have already visited.

Similarly, 7% of British people plan to visit our country, while a similar percentage have visited in the past.

As far as the French market is concerned, Greece seems to attract 5% of French travellers this autumn and the upcoming winter season, while 4% of French travellers have already visited the country.

According to the findings of the 20th report, 73% of Europeans are planning trips between October 2024 and March 2025, representing a 6% increase, compared to the same period last year.

The UK leads the way, with 84% of respondents expressing a desire to travel, reflecting a 10% increase from 2023. Germany follows closely behind with 79% (up 16%) and France with 78% (up 15%).

Commenting on the findings, Miguel Sanz, President of ETC, said: “Today’s findings reveal a strong enthusiasm for travel among Europeans, highlighting their attention to travel budgets even after the peak summer months. Alongside this enthusiasm is a growing interest in exploring lesser-known destinations, presenting unique opportunities to explore areas off the beaten track. Younger generations are particularly keen to discover hidden gems. By embracing these diverse travel options, we can promote responsible tourism while supporting local economies and preserving cultural heritage.”

Travel demand is growing, driven by younger Europeans

New data reveals a growing enthusiasm for travel across all age groups in Europe, with the most notable increase being among younger Europeans. Travel intentions among the 25-34 age group have increased to 75%, reflecting a 9% year-on-year increase. Similarly, 64% of 18-24 year olds now plan to travel, up 8%, while 78% of 35-44 year olds show a 7% increase.

Meanwhile, younger travellers are planning to travel more frequently, with a strong preference for city breaks and relaxing holidays to sunny and seaside destinations.

Older travellers in Europe are also keen to travel, with 75% of people aged 55 and over expressing a desire to do so, a 4% increase in their plans. Almost half (45%) are planning trips of more than seven nights, particularly seeking experiences rich in culture and tradition or nature and countryside. These older travellers tend to prefer familiar destinations with reliable tourist infrastructure.

Lesser known points in focus

The report also reveals, for the first time, the types of destinations Europeans want to explore in the countries they have chosen to travel to, with 51% of respondents orienting themselves towards lesser-known places, presumably to avoid the crowds seen in popular areas. In particular, 38% are looking for less touristy locations, while 18% plan to explore remote, ‘new’ areas with little infrastructure.

Younger generations are leading this trend, showing a clear preference for experiences beyond the ordinary. Among Europeans, Polish (50%), Spanish (45%) and Dutch (44%) travellers are opting for quieter and less crowded locations, leading the shift to these new areas.

Higher budgets, less concern about costs

As 2024 approaches, European travellers are showing less and less concern about the cost of travel in their holiday planning. Now, 19% are expressing concerns about travel costs, a 3% drop from the previous year. The most common budget, chosen by 27% of travellers, is €500-1,000 per person per trip. Close behind, 26% plan to spend a higher amount of €1,500 to €2,500, reflecting a 3% increase on last year.

Despite a reduction in concerns about the cost of travel and inflation, 15% of respondents are still worried about their overall financial situation. Other major concerns include the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war, which worries 13% of respondents, and tensions in the Middle East, which worries 9%. While concerns about extreme weather events have decreased by 4% compared to last year, 10% still express concern. In addition, 9% are concerned about potential travel disruptions from strikes or staff shortages and another 9% are worried about overcrowding in their chosen destinations.

When it comes to choosing holiday destinations, safety is the top criterion for 18% of Europeans, followed by stable weather and bargains, both at 12%. Friendly and welcoming locals are also a priority for 10% of travellers.
