The island of Rhodes is emerging as the top destination for stargazing, according to Fred’s experts. Olsen, who reveal the list of the five best destinations for stargazing in the world.
With astrotourism set to be a major travel trend in 2024, Fred. Dr. Olsen presents the five best spots on a global scale for stargazing and enjoying the night sky, since with light pollution affecting 80% of the planet – and increasing by about 10% every year – choosing the right spot is more important than ever.
Fred’s experts. Dr. Olsen analyzed hundreds of data on locations, weather, and reviews on TripAdvisor and came up with the following five top coastal stargazing destinations.
First of the first is Rhodes, with the company pointing out that “what makes Rhodes stand out is the extremely low levels of light pollution and the average cloudiness corresponding to only 20%, making it an ideal location for observing the night sky”. A point of reference for lovers of the night sky is the popular Astronomy Cafe, where visitors have the opportunity to live the experience of stargazing at the two observatories, enjoying their coffee or drink.
In second place is Hvar, Croatia, the sunniest spot in the country, with 2,724 hours of sunshine each year.
According to Fred. According to Dr. Olsen, Hvar enjoys remarkably low levels of illumination at night, creating ideal conditions for stargazing. It is proud to host the first International Dark Sky Society of Southern Europe.
Meanwhile, the charming port city of Jelsa, the island’s second-largest, has earned a place among more than 195 places worldwide that have been designated as prime stargazing spots by the International Dark Sky Association.
Next on the list is Korčula, also in Croatia, famous not only for its beauty, but also for its excellent stargazing conditions, thanks to its very low light pollution and altitude.
In fourth place is Kusadasi, Turkey’s popular seaside resort city, suitable for stargazing thanks to its low light pollution, high altitude and relatively low humidity.
Rounding out the top five is Agadir, located southwest of Marrakech, on the southern Atlantic coast in Morocco, which offers a unique stargazing experience. Despite its urban environment, which contributes to higher levels of illumination, Agadir boasts very low cloud cover and the highest atmospheric pressure among our top destinations, ensuring exceptionally clear night skies.
