36.4 million overnight stays in Greece in short-term rentals | What EUROSTAT data show for 2023

A significant increase of 13.8% in overnight stays in short-term rentals in Europe in 2023, compared to 2022, with Greece participating in this increase, as it ranks sixth, with just over 36.4 million overnight stays, according to data from the European Statistical Authority (Eurostat).

In absolute terms, it is estimated that last year, travellers booked 678.6 million nights in short-term rental accommodation in the EU through Airbnb, Booking, Expedia Group or TripAdvisor, compared to 596.5 million the previous year.

The most popular regions for Airbnb accommodation in Q3 2023, based on the number of nights, were Jadranska Hrvatska in Croatia (23.7 million nights), Andalusia in Spain (14 million nights) and the French Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (12.2 million nights).

In the same quarter, among the top 20 regions, six were in France, five each in Spain and Italy, two in Greece and one each in Croatia and Portugal.

According to Eurostat data, in the top 20 regions in Europe in terms of nights spent in short-term rental accommodation in 2023, the two Greek regions in the top 20 are the South Aegean region, with more than 4.6 million nights, and the Ionian Islands region, with almost 4.3 million nights.

 

Other regions in Greece with a high number of overnight stays in Airbnb accommodation are the region of Crete with over 3.9 million overnight stays, the region of Central Macedonia with just over 3 million overnight stays and the region of Attica with around 3 million overnight stays.

Greece, with just over 36.4 million overnight stays, ranked sixth in Europe in terms of the number of overnight stays, with France first (around 152 million overnight stays), Spain second (133 million), Italy third (100 million), Germany fourth (46 million) and Portugal fifth (38 million).

According to Eurostat, monthly data for bookings made through online booking platforms exceeded the previous year in 11 out of 12 months, while the last quarter of 2023 recorded an increase of more than 20%.

Specifically, 55.3 million nights were spent in accommodation booked through online platforms in October, up 21.9% compared to October last year. Meanwhile, there were 31.8 million overnight stays in November [+20% compared to November 2022] and 45.3 million in December (+25.8% compared to December 2022).
