Greek island among the best destinations in Europe for holidays this year

TOURISM WORLD

Thassos is included in the list of the 20 best European destinations in 2024, published by the European Best Destinations (EBD), based on the votes of more than one million travellers from 172 countries.

In particular, Thassos is placed 20th in the ranking, with EBD describing it as “an adventure in an earthly paradise”.

The report on Thassos notes that “it is a little corner of the lost paradise that Greeks prefer to keep to themselves, with a natural lagoon that offers a stunning contrast to the turquoise sea, enlivened by the warm welcome of the locals”.

Thassos is a special tourist destination that attracts thousands of tourists from Macedonia and Southern Greece. The island is ideal for couples, groups of friends and couples. It combines relaxation and nightlife, which means that it can accommodate different kinds of cultures and people.

With a record number of votes, Marbella in Spain tops the list, and is the first time a Spanish destination has taken the top spot in the ranking.

“It is the destination voted by the most American and British travellers to stay in Europe in 2024. It is a sunny, five-star, nature, sports and gastronomic destination that has everything that can satisfy the most demanding travellers,” EBD explains.

Marbella is followed by Monaco, Malta, Geneva and Batumi (Georgia) in the top five.

The 20 most popular destinations selected for their quality of life, sustainable development, year-round cultural offer, increased popularity on social networks and international recognition (Smart Tourism, European Union Green Capital, UNESCO, Blue Flags, etc.) will be promoted throughout the year and will be entitled to the coveted title of “Best European Destination 2024”, EBD said.

“Exclusive destinations are coming back into the spotlight. At the same time, we are seeing a new trend towards destinations outside the usual, smaller destinations such as Ponza, Porto-Vecchio, Cap Ferret, Sirmione and the Faroe Islands for a simple and enjoyable holiday,” said Maximilien Lejeune, managing director of European Best Destinations. He added: “With award-winning destinations such as Monaco, Marbella, Malta, Geneva, Madeira, Florence, Riga and Batumi, we clearly see the desire for exclusive travel to destinations recognised for the quality of their offerings and services.”

According to Mr Lejeune, EBD’s ranking shows that travellers want to enjoy gastronomic, cultural, sensory and sporting experiences and prefer destinations that combine beach, outdoor activities, nightlife and exploration in complete freedom, without plans or restrictions.
