Athens among the top travel destinations for Americans this summer | Airline tickets from less than $1,000

Athens is among the most popular destinations Americans will travel to this summer, according to recent flight booking data and Google searches, with round-trip ticket prices starting at less than $1,000.

Athens is ranked sixth in the nine exciting summer destinations suggested by The travel to US-based travellers, with the cost of a return flight from New York to the Greek capital starting from $953 and from Los Angeles from $1,254.
Referring to Athens, the publication points out that the capital of Greece, founded in 3,000 BC, has always been a tourist attraction, but it is also a great destination for retirees because it is relatively safe and affordable, not to mention it offers free emergency health care services.

“Those who holiday there are offered a wide range of archaeological attractions, shopping suggestions, jogging areas, street art and delicious food. There are even many hotels near the Acropolis of Athens, allowing tourists to base themselves right next to this iconic archaeological monument.”
Best of all, the publication adds, Athens is a solid base for exploring the Greek islands by boat, from Kea to Poros, Santorini and Mykonos. There are also many excellent options for day trips from Athens, including the monasteries of Meteora and Lake Vouliagmeni.

The top spot is occupied by London, with the cost of a return flight from New York to the British capital starting from $800 and from Los Angeles from $989.
Paris comes in second place, with round-trip costs from New York to the City of Light starting at $812 and from Los Angeles at $987.
